BBQ Off the Bypass Takes a Time-Out

Angie Quaale thanks the community for 11 years of support

[Langley, BC] Angie Quaale, BBQ Off the Bypass competition producer, shares that she will not be producing the annual BBQ Off the Bypass in 2017.

After 11 successful years of gathering the community to taste and celebrate Low & Slow Southern Style BBQ, it is with mixed emotions that Quaale, owner of the Well Seasoned Gourmet Food Store and cooking school in Langley, made the decision to take a break from the festival.

Instead of producing BBQ Off the Bypass, Quaale will invest her energy and talents further into her store and its growing ready-to-eat and grab and go options, and she will continue the work she does to give back to the community. She will carry on her work in the Township of Langley and beyond, and continue to be a champion for eating local, supporting homegrown products.

Quaale is grateful to all of the competitors, sponsors, and the community for the amazing support, and looks forward to working with all of them in the future, in varying ways.

Started as a small parking lot pop-up event to draw attention to Well Seasoned Gourmet Food Store, over the years the annual BBQ Off the Bypass has come to draw in thousands of people from not only Langley, but also Vancouver and the surrounding communities.

Over the 11-year span of the competition, dozens of new pit masters, judges, and head judges have been trained, and thousands of fans emerged with a true appreciation for Low & Slow Southern Style BBQ. The competition also had a measurable impact on the community: BOTB has raised more than $75,000 for Fraser Valley charities.

The BBQ Off the Bypass was hosted and organized by the staff at Well Seasoned gourmet food store and cooking school in Langley. Owner Angie Quaale was introduced to competitive barbecuing in 2004 when she met BBQ evangelist and Canadian BBQ Champion Rockin’ Ronnie Shewchuk. Quaale figured the best way to join the quest for the ultimate BBQ was to host a competition. In 2005, she invited teams to travel Langley, BC from all over the Pacific Northwest and, as a result, the BBQ on the Bypass (its original name) was born.

The successful barbecue competition celebrated its 11th anniversary in 2016.

Angie Quaale shares, “The community surrounding BBQ off the Bypass can never be replicated, and I thank everybody who has taken part from the beginning, for their trust in me to create a successful competition and festival celebrating barbecue.”

“I am very proud continue to produce the Barn Burner BBQ which takes place each spring in Chilliwack; and for those who need their barbeque fix, it’s a great way to start off the season. This family-friendly BBQ extravaganza is officially sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society. Free-to-attend, donations will be accepted upon entry for a local charity, which changes each year, so we can help people in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey and surrounding communities. I hope to see you all there next spring.”

The energy at this year’s competition brought even more heat as 19 teams from Washington and BC traveled to compete for a prize pool of $5,000 and the grand championship title (highest total accumulated points across all BBQ categories) that was taken home by Dances with Smoke from Renton, Washington.

Passionate BBQ teams showcased their talents while families and friends gathered over delicious food and gave back to the community by supporting local charitable partner, TinyKittens. Also, special thanks to our pie and BBQ judges for evaluating another intense competition this year.” – Angie Quaale, BBQ champion and founder of BOTB.
