The News:

A decade of smoking hot BBQ and community fun were celebrated at the 2015 BBQ *Off* the Bypass (BOTB), presented by C&D Logistics, on September 13th, 2015. The event also welcomed the 6th annual Great BC Bake-Off.

All proceeds from the event were donated to TinyKittens Society.

More than 5,000 meat lovers of all ages attended this free public event to enjoy free samples of delicious slow-cooked meat, purchased take home treats from vendors, and participated in free activities including face-painting, festival games and live performances by local band, The New Shackeltons.

Admission was by donation, with all proceeds collected ($6,809.95) to support Langley-based TinyKittens Society, a 100% volunteer-run animal rescue to promote the welfare of cats.

Already a beautiful and hot day, the energy at this year’s competition was even hotter as more than 19 teams from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Oregon, Washington and all over BC traveled to compete for the Grand Championship title and a cash prize of $10,000 shared by the winning teams.

Visiting Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) head judges Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh led a local team of certified judges to judge a very close competition with Hog Shack Cook House taking home the Grand Championship, after achieving the highest total points in all four competition categories: chicken, ribs, pork shoulder (pulled pork) and beef brisket. With only 0.046 points behind, Lake House BBQ took home the title of Reserve Grand Champion (2nd place).

Surrey’s Stacked Racks BBQ was the winner of the Black Box competition with their turkey roll using this year’s mystery ingredients: JD Farms ground turkey, ginger and carob molasses.

In addition to the BBQ competition, the 6th annual Great BC Bake-Off also took place at this year’s event with 26 fresh, homemade pies entered in one of the three categories: fruit pie, butter tarts and an open category. It was a close competition with Sandra Sayer taking home the Fruit Pie championship with her Dutch Apple Jack Pie and Beth Watt winning the Anything Pie category with Corn Onion Galotte. Finally, last year’s pie winner, Colleen of Big Dog BBQ took home the Butter Tart category.

An additional prize for this year’s pie winners, Aldergrove’s Otter Co-Op will scale each first place winner’s recipes and bake them to sell at the store.

“As the interest in BBQ increases each year, we have more teams joining to cook, more judges to judge and more spectators to enjoy. BBQ *Off* the Bypass is more than a day event. It’s a community that brings people together to celebrate, share and support one another. I can’t wait to see what the 11th year will bring for us in 2016. See you there!” – Angie Quaale, BBQ champion and founder of BOTB.

Another win! Thanks Otter Coop

It was an excellent weekend of BBQ at Well Seasoned and as we draw the shades on this year’s BBQ *Off* the Bypass 10 presented by C&D Logistics, we look back at the weekend with real fondness. We were so happy to work with TinyKittens are our charity this year and were so proud of all the donations that our attendees and vendors raised for the cause.

We wanted to do a special shout out for Otter Coop for really committing to #donutsforkittens and going above and beyond.

Long story short – we (BOTB team) screwed up the electrical requirements for the Otter Coop mini donut machine but we didn’t find out until Sunday morning that there was a problem. Mike, the Otter manager went into plan-B mode and sent the fryer back to the coop. He then arranged a donut shuttle system. Fresh, hot donuts were sent to the site every hour all day long. Otter raised $625 selling mini donuts and ALL of it goes to TinyKittens.

Now that’s commitment. High five Otter Coop!
We’re still tallying the total donation number, so check back soon for another update.
