THE NEWS:
Eleven years of smoking hot BBQ and community fun were celebrated in Langley on Sunday, September 11 at the 2016 BBQ Off the Bypass (BOTB), presented by Well Seasoned Gourmet Food Store and C&D Logistics, in partnership with Johnston’s. This year’s BBQ also welcomed the 7th annual Great BC Bake-Off.

More than 5,000 meat lovers of all ages attended this free public event and tasted free samples of delicious slow-cooked meat, purchased take home treats from vendors, and enjoyed festive activities and live performance by local band, The New Shackeltons. Admission was by donation with more than $6,000 raised to support Langley’s TinyKittens Society.

The energy at this year’s competition brought even more heat as 19 teams from Washington and BC traveled to compete for a prize pool of $5,000 and the grand championship title (highest total accumulated points across all BBQ categories) that was taken home by Dances with Smoke from Renton, Washington.

2016 BBQ Winners (Each Category):

  • Chicken: Hog Shack Cook House, Richmond, BC
  • Beef Brisket: Dances with Smoke – Renton, WA
  • Pork Ribs: SmellaQue, Calgary, AB
  • Pork: Rusty’s BBQ, Port Moody, BC
  • Blackbox: Stacked Racks, Surrey, BC

2016 Great BC Bake-Off Winners (Each Category):

  • Fruit Pie: Jenny Baxter, Tropical Peach Mango Pie with a Vodka Crust
  • Butter Tart: Sharon Waldron, Winny Walley’s Wonderful Bacon Pecan Butter Tarts
  • Anything goes: Saffron Hodgson, Bush Kitchen Chocolate Pie Tart

This year’s Blackbox mystery ingredients were: JD Farms Turkey Thigh, Johnston’s Kessler Pork Loin and Modena Balsamic Vinegar.

Recipes for winning pies will soon be published on Great BC Bake-Off.

“We celebrated Southern style BBQ in the best way possible. Passionate BBQ teams showcased their talents while families and friends gathered over delicious food and gave back to the community by supporting local charitable partner, TinyKittens. Also, special thanks to our pie and BBQ judges for evaluating another intense competition this year.” – Angie Quaale, BBQ champion and founder of BOTB.

Food Truck Announcement: WHOLE HOG from Johnston’s

Johnston's Whole Hog

We can hardly contain our excitement! Johnston’s, this year’s title sponsor and pork category sponsor, will have their rotisserie on site to roast a WHOLE PIG! If you made it to this year’s Barn Burner BBQ event, you saw (and hopefully tasted) it in action!

Our 2016 Charitable Partner!

We’re very proud to have back our charitable partner Tiny Kittens.  Tiny Kittens’ will again act as our event greeters and will have donation boxes at both entrances.

Entry is still free but people are encouraged to make a donation – all proceeds go to Langley based TinyKittens. We LOVE the rescue work they do and know that every penny we raise is SO important to the cats & kittens they help! You can check out the work they do on their website.   http://www.tinykittens.com/projects

The official purpose of TinyKittens Society is to promote the welfare of cats by:

  • rescuing stray, feral, abandoned, unwanted or abused cats
  • encouraging responsible pet ownership through education for the general public
  • partnering with schools to offer classroom education for students

They’re back!
